The goal of a state of the art is to draw up an overview of current knowledge, in order to <strong>highlight the limits of this knowledge<\/strong> and, where applicable, confirm the value of investigating the topic further. If you&#8217;ve clearly defined the scope of your theme, the main keywords are easy to determine.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And as you carry out your initial searches, you&#8217;ll <strong>refine them, adding to them or, conversely, excluding keywords<\/strong> that bring back too much &#8220;noise&#8221;, meaning irrelevant documents. At this stage you may need to use Boolean operators (And, Or), exclusion operators (Not), or even proximity operators (X words apart, for example, between &#8220;Word A&#8221; and &#8220;Word B&#8221;).<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><div style=\"background-color: #fffaf8; padding: 20px; border: 1px solid #f1e7e2; border-radius: 8px;\"> <p style=\"margin: 0; font-weight: 400; color: #0f102c;\"> <em>Good to know: <strong>for your state of the art to be relevant, the time spent refining the search strategy <\/strong>(not to be confused with the analysis phase) <strong>can be relatively long<\/strong>. And you should always prefer to keep a bit of &#8220;noise&#8221;, meaning irrelevant documents that are hard to exclude without losing useful information. It will be easy to exclude them later during the analysis phase. And of course, the sources used and the list of keywords (together, your search strategy) must be cited, as well as the time period and, where applicable, the geographic scope covered.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-468d383 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"468d383\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h3><strong>STEP 3<\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3>Summarize the knowledge gathered and draw the necessary conclusions<\/h3>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Based on the overview drawn up, you now need to <strong>demonstrate how current knowledge does or does not allow you to answer your question<\/strong>. A state of the art can also aim to highlight potential technological hurdles or scientific uncertainties. By structuring your project well, and working on your search strategy upfront, you can reverse this proportion. Not only will producing this state of the art then feel less tedious, but above all it will have far more strategic value!<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every PhD student has (in theory) learned to produce states of the art, but once in a job, it&#8217;s not uncommon for them to delegate this task, for lack of time and\u2026 motivation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And yet, <strong>when done well, this exercise can prove extremely useful and conducive to genuinely stepping back from the strategic questions the company is facing<\/strong>.
